Climate Crisis in Pakistan: Urgent Need for Action to Combat Rising Threats

by: ALI RAZA

The weather is changing rapidly due to climate change, creating severe impacts on human life. Experts emphasize the urgent need to plant more and more trees to help mitigate these effects.

Over the last five years, Pakistan has experienced unusual and extreme weather conditions, including heatwaves, floods, and shifting rainfall patterns. These changes are primarily driven by global climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, urbanization, and pollution. Rising global temperatures have led to glacier melting, altered monsoon cycles, and an increase in natural disasters.

Karachi, the capital of Sindh, is among the most affected cities. Once known for its moderate coastal climate, the city now faces severe heatwaves, irregular rainfall, urban flooding, and water shortages. The 2015 heatwave alone claimed over 1,200 lives, and since then, extreme temperatures have become more frequent. Poor infrastructure and unplanned urban development have further worsened the situation.

The health effects of this changing climate are alarming. Heatwaves cause dehydration, heatstroke, and even death—particularly among low-income communities. Flooding contributes to the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and hepatitis. Additionally, mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue and malaria are on the rise. Air pollution further exacerbates respiratory conditions, including asthma and bronchitis.

Climate expert Professor Dr. Ismail Kumbhar stated that excessive tree cutting has contributed to rising temperatures. He noted that people are removing trees in their local areas, which worsens the climate crisis. Dr. Kumbhar emphasized the importance of planting more trees, which can help combat climate change and foster a more environmentally friendly society. He added that such efforts, even at the individual level, can make a meaningful difference.

To protect lives and reduce future risks, Pakistan urgently needs effective climate adaptation strategies, improved healthcare systems, and increased public awareness. Without immediate action, cities like Karachi will continue to face the escalating consequences of climate change.
